Like mixed media works, abstract paintings are quite fun and so completely different than painting more realistic scenes of nature. There is a freedom in completing an abstract painting, although the very same elements of traditional paintings apply here as well. In an abstract, I start with a single idea, such as a shape, and then repeat that shape, or put in a contrasting shape or color, and continue in that way. Each entry informs me as to what is to come next. In that way I often feel I am just the hand that holds the pastel, the ideas simply flow through me.
