Artist Information

Pastel 100 Award winner for Abstract

I began my journey as an artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I earned a BFA in painting and drawing in 1970. This journey was really already established for me at age 8, when I declared that I would “be an artist when I grow up”. However, it was many years and diverse life experiences later when I finally was able to paint full time. I moved to Central Oregon in 1998 and resumed my pursuit of artistic expression, first in beadwork, and then in pastel and water color paintings. Workshops with plein air painters in Oregon and New Mexico introduced me to the wonderful world of painting out-of-doors.

Several years ago I learned the technique of underpainting with watercolor on sanded paper. This enhances the pastels and makes the paintings rich with color and depth.  As I develop the composition, I use strong values of light and dark to bring the viewers eye into my work. Soft pastels are applied in thin layers, or veils, to create atmosphere and substance.

I have always sought to convey the inherent beauty of my subject as well as the underlying meaning contained beneath the surface. I hope to depict something of the eternal energy and spirit of the life around us ~ something felt as well as seen. The ever-changing light and atmosphere that illumines our surroundings.

The creative process is and always will be something of a mystery to me, as it should be; mystical and magical.  I try to abide by this quote from Edgar Degas:

“Only when he no longer knows what he is doing, does the artist do good things.”

My paintings, prints, and drawings are in numerous private collections scattered throughout the United States, and I am the recipient of several local and national awards. My work may be seen at the Tumalo Art Co., an artist-run gallery in the Old Mill District in Bend, Oregon.
